Travel Resources I Actually Use

I’ve spent years travelling full-time around Australia in my self-built campervan. These are the exact travel resources I use every day — from planning trips and finding camps to staying connected and booking on the road. No fluff. Just what actually works.

Before diving into the tools, this is how I actually travel day-to-day:

  • I plan a rough route — not a strict itinerary
  • I use apps like WikiCamps daily to find places to stay
  • I book accommodation last minute when needed
  • I download maps offline before heading remote
  • I keep things flexible and adjust as I go

These travel resources below fit into that system — they’re not just “nice to have”, they make travel easier. Most people overcomplicate travel with to many travel resources Australia — you don’t need much, just the right tools.

Travel Insurance

  • Cover-More – Aussie-based company with solid coverage. Easy claims process and covers remote areas better than most.

Accommodation

  • Booking – best overall. Huge range + free cancellation on most listings I use Booking.com for 90% of my stays when I’m not camping.
  • Hostelworld – great for budget travel or meeting people. I’ve used it in 80+ countries
  • Expedia – useful when bundling flights + stays
  • Airbnb – good for unique stays or longer trips
  • Hipcamp – private camps you won’t find anywhere else
  • Aussie House Sitters – One of the best platforms for finding house sitting opportunities across Australia.

Tours

Car Rentals

  • Rental Cars – compares major providers with flexible options
  • Discover Cars – often cheaper with smaller/local companies

Caravan Rentals

  • JUCY campervans – compact, budget friendly and easy to drive.
  • Star RV – more premium, more space while on the road.

Apps I NEVER Travel Without

  • WikiCamps – I use this every single day for camps, water, toilets, and dump points
  • Camps Australia Wide – another solid option for finding camps
  • Petrol Spy – helps find the cheapest fuel nearby
  • Maps.Me – I use this for offline hiking trails and exploring (worldwide) when I’m out of signal. It’s especially good for walking routes and less obvious tracks that don’t always show up on Google Maps.
  • Google Maps (offline) – essential when you lose signal, or not travelling with Starlink.

Staying Connected on the Road

  • Starlink – game changer when you’re off-grid with no signal
  • Offline downloads – I download Netflix/YouTube when I know I’ll be remote
